How to Calculate Your Grade
Whether you're tracking a single assignment or trying to figure out your overall course average, a grade calculator works by combining each of your scores according to how much each one counts toward your final mark. This process — known as weighted averaging — ensures that a 40% final exam has more impact on your result than a 5% pop quiz.
Unweighted Average
When no weights are entered, your grade is a simple arithmetic mean. Add all your scores together and divide by the number of scores.
Average = (Score₁ + Score₂ + … + Scoreₙ) / n
Example: (80 + 90 + 72) / 3 = 80.7%
Weighted Average
With weights, each score is multiplied by its relative importance before the average is taken. This is the most common method used by professors and teachers when different components of a course carry different values.
Weighted Grade = Σ(Score × Weight) / Σ(Weight)
Example: Homework 80% (20 wt) + Midterm 78% (30 wt) + Final 91% (50 wt)
= (80×20 + 78×30 + 91×50) / (20+30+50) = (1600+2340+4550)/100 = 84.9%
Standard Letter Grade Scale
Most US schools use the following conversion between percentages and letter grades. Some schools use +/− grades; others use a simplified A/B/C/D/F scale. Always check your school's official grading policy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do weights have to add up to 100%?
No — this calculator works even if your weights don't sum to exactly 100. It divides by the total weight you enter, not by 100. So if you enter weights of 20, 30, and 50, your total is 100 and the result is a standard weighted average. If you enter 2, 3, and 5, the math is identical — it still weights them proportionally.
What if I don't know my weights?
Leave the weight fields blank and the calculator will use a simple average instead, treating every assignment equally. You can always go back and add weights once you find your course syllabus.
How do I calculate the grade I need on my final?

Is an 89.5% rounded up to an A?
That depends entirely on your professor or school policy. Some instructors round 0.5 and above to the next letter grade; others do not. The standard cut-offs used here (90% = A−) do not include automatic rounding. Always clarify with your instructor before expecting a grade bump.
