How the Final Grade Calculator Works
This calculator answers the most common pre-exam question students have: "What do I need on my final to get the grade I want?" The calculation rearranges the standard weighted average formula to solve for the unknown final exam score.
Final exam score = (Target grade − Current grade × (1 − Final weight)) ÷ Final weight
Example: Current grade 82%, target 85%, final worth 30%
= (85 − 82 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (85 − 57.4) ÷ 0.30 = 92%
What if the Score Needed is Over 100%?
If the required score exceeds 100%, your target grade is mathematically not achievable. At this point you have two options: accept a lower target grade, or check whether your professor offers any extra credit opportunities. The calculator will flag this situation clearly.
Frequently Asked Questions
My final is worth 40% — how much can it change my grade?
With a 40% final, the remaining 60% is already locked in. If your current grade is 75%, the maximum you can achieve is 0.6×75 + 0.4×100 = 45 + 40 = 85%. The minimum (scoring 0 on the final) would be 0.6×75 = 45%. So a 40% final can swing your grade by up to 40 percentage points in either direction.
Can I use this for multiple remaining assignments?
Yes — the "final exam weight" field accepts any percentage. If you have a midterm (15%) and a final (25%) still remaining, enter 40% as the combined weight. The result tells you the average score you need across both remaining assessments to hit your target.
