How to Calculate a Tip

Calculating a tip is simple once you know the formula. A tip is a percentage of the pre-tax bill amount given to the service provider as a gratuity for good service. The standard tip percentage varies widely by country and type of service.

The basic formula is: Tip Amount = Bill × (Tip Percentage ÷ 100). For example, a 20% tip on a $85.00 bill = $85.00 × 0.20 = $17.00 tip, making the total $102.00.

Tip on pre-tax or post-tax amount?

In the United States, it is common practice and generally considered correct to tip on the pre-tax amount — the subtotal before sales tax is applied. Some people tip on the total including tax, which results in a slightly higher tip for the server. Either is acceptable; the difference is usually small.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should you tip at a restaurant?

In the United States, 18–20% is the standard tip for good service at a sit-down restaurant. 15% is acceptable for average service. For exceptional service, 25% or more is appropriate. In the UK, 10–15% is standard, and in many countries such as Japan and South Korea, tipping is not customary at all and may even be considered impolite.

Is it rude to not tip?

In countries where tipping is expected — particularly the United States, Canada, and Mexico — not tipping is generally considered rude, especially at sit-down restaurants where servers' wages are supplemented by tips. In countries where tipping is not the norm (Japan, South Korea, parts of Europe), not tipping is perfectly acceptable and expected.

Should you tip on the total or subtotal?

It is generally accepted to tip on the pre-tax subtotal in the United States. Some people tip on the full total including tax — the difference is small and both are considered polite. This calculator uses the bill amount you enter, so you can input either the pre-tax or post-tax figure depending on your preference.

How do you split a bill unevenly?

This calculator splits the total (bill + tip) equally between all people. For uneven splits — where different people ordered different amounts — you would calculate each person's share of the pre-tip bill separately, then add their proportional share of the tip. An alternative approach is to calculate the total tip for the whole table and divide it equally, even if the food costs were not equal.
