How to Convert Grams to Cups

To convert grams to cups, divide the weight in grams by the weight of one cup of that specific ingredient. Because different ingredients have different densities, there is no single universal conversion — 1 cup of flour weighs very differently to 1 cup of honey.

Cups = grams ÷ grams per cup for that ingredient

Why grams and cups don't convert simply

Cups are a volume measurement while grams measure weight (mass). The conversion factor is the ingredient's density. Water has a density of 1 g/ml, so 240 ml (1 US cup) = 240g. But flour is much less dense — a cup of flour weighs only about 125g. This means you cannot use a single multiplier to convert any ingredient from grams to cups without knowing the ingredient.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many cups is 100 grams of flour?

100 grams of all-purpose flour is approximately 0.8 cups (just under 1 cup). Since 1 cup of all-purpose flour weighs about 125g, 100g = 100 ÷ 125 = 0.8 cups.

How many cups is 200 grams of sugar?

200 grams of granulated white sugar is exactly 1 cup, since 1 US cup of white sugar weighs 200g.

How many cups is 250 grams of flour?

250 grams of all-purpose flour is approximately 2 cups. 1 cup of all-purpose flour weighs 125g, so 250g ÷ 125g = 2 cups.

How do you convert grams to cups?

Divide the weight in grams by the weight of one cup of that ingredient. For example, 100g of butter ÷ 227g per cup = 0.44 cups. The weight per cup varies by ingredient — which is why this calculator covers 40+ ingredients individually.
